United MileagePlus Club Card Reviews
The United MileagePlus Club Card is a premium airline rewards credit card whose luxury perks and points-earning potential make this one of the better luxury cards for people who love to travel.

About United MileagePlus Club Card
In the airline credit card world, there are two types of cards: luxury and non-luxury.
Fans of United Airlines who want a premium travel experience may just love the United MileagePlus Club, an airline rewards credit card with a $450 annual fee and several perks that most travelers don’t get when they sign up for non-luxury airline cards.
The premium airline and travel credit card market is really competitive though, so it helps to do a little research to find out which card will be the best fit for you.
If you’re a United loyalist, for example, you may get a better deal from the Chase Sapphire Reserve because that card’s bonus points can be transferred to your United MileagePlus account.
Because the luxury airline/travel card space is so competitive, we’re going to do a thorough review of the United MileagePlus Club so you can be well prepared to make your decision.
Our review will cover the most important features of this card: travel benefits, non-travel benefits, rates and fees, and the opinions of other experts and consumers.
As we move through each of these sections, we’ll do some comparisons between the Club, Explorer and non-United premium travel cards.
The final few paragraphs will summarize the pros and cons of the card, with a quick last word on who we think this card is good for.
The United MileagePlus Club Card’s Travel Benefits
The MileagePlus Club’s travel benefits can be broken down into a few different categories, all of which we’ll talk about in the next few minutes.
One of the coolest features of premium travel and airline cards is free or discounted passes to airline lounges around the world.
While non-airline cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve and the American Express Platinum offer entrance into Priority Pass lounges (international network, not as many locations in the U.S.), United gives you free year-round entrance to United Club lounges.
Here’s a quick list of features of these United airport lounges:
- Free Wi-Fi
- Complimentary alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages
- Afternoon snacks
- Nearly 50 clubs in the U.S. and abroad
- Access to Star Alliance lounges (more than 1,000 worldwide)
You and your traveling partners (on the same flight reservation) can access the club as long as you’re flying the same day.
A few things to keep in mind:
- Takes up to two weeks for United Club membership to activate
- United Club entrance card should arrive within six weeks
- Existing Club members can get a prorated refund
A yearly United Club membership is $550 with a $50 startup fee.
If the United Club is your way to relax before your flight, then Premier Access is United’s way of making life comfortable from security to check-in to boarding:
- Designated check-in
- Priority security lanes
- Priority boarding
- Priority baggage handling (your baggage comes off the plane first)
What we find interesting about this list is that you get all the perks you’d want when you go through an airport and you don’t have to pay for any of them. You see, other luxury travel cards will get you priority security check-in, but you’ll have to pay for it yourself and then get reimbursed by the credit card issuer.
United skips all that and offers everything as one package without any reimbursements, which we see as an advantage over other cards. Another perk? Everyone traveling with you on the same reservation gets Priority Access privileges, too.
Whenever you travel with United and you book your ticket with your United MileagePlus Club card, your first and second checked bags will be free of charge. The same benefit will be extended to one other person on your reservation.
United’s baggage fees are $25 for the first bag and $35 for the second bag, which means this perk is worth up to $120 per reservation on a round-trip flight.
Remember that you need to make the booking with your MileagePlus Club credit card to get the benefit.
Also, in order to get free bags, you can’t book your United tickets through a third-party site like Hotwire or Priceline.
Also, oversized bags aren’t eligible for the free-baggage perk.
Whenever you book travel with your MileagePlus Club card, you’ll be entitled to a pair of baggage protection programs.
If your baggage is delayed for more than six hours, you can be reimbursed for up to $100 a day for three days.
If the airline loses your baggage, then you’ll be covered for up to $3,000 for every passenger booked on your reservation.
These two programs have their limits and exclusions, so be sure to read through the details written in the benefits guide you get when Chase sends you your card.
The main non-travel benefits of this card are the MileagePlus points you earn whenever you make purchases with your MileagePlus Club card.
All United ticket purchases get a 2x bonus and all other purchases (minus a few random things like poker chips, traveler’s checks, and credit card fees) get 1.5x MileagePlus points.
Based on our research of Americans’ spending habits, we think the average family could spend at least $24,000 per year on their Club card. However, since this card caters to those with higher incomes, we think the spending habits of MileagePlus Club cardholders are a little more aggressive than the average family.
So, we’ll assume that the average cardholder will spend at least $36,000 a year on their card. At this clip, you could earn 54,000 points a year, which is good for one round-trip flight in the U.S.
If you get lucky enough to book United’s 12,500-point fares, you could get two round-trip flights with your bonus points.
Free World of Hyatt Globalist Status
United MileagePlus Club cardholders will earn complimentary Globalist status in the World of Hyatt loyalty program.
This status normally takes 60 nights to earn, so, right off the bat, you can see that free Globalist status is a valuable perk.
Here are a few of the privileges you get at Hyatt hotels when you have Globalist status:
- Free suite upgrades based on availability
- Waived resort fees
- 30% bonus on redeemed points
- Free breakfast for up to two adults and two children
- Free access to Club lounge
- 4 p.m. checkout
- Free parking
Globalist is by far the most lucrative free loyalty membership any airline card offers, and, for that reason, we think it makes the MileagePlus Club a unique card.
Pro tip: You’ll also get a $100 statement credit after your first purchase.
The United MileagePlus Club Card’s Rates and Fees
Before we get into the details here, we want to point out that credit cards are of the greatest value to you when you don’t carry a balance.
The moment you don’t pay off your balance in full every month, Chase will charge you an interest rate.
That interest rate racks up interest every day and, if allowed to exist for an entire year, can cancel out any benefit the card gives you.
And considering that recent numbers from Value Penguin indicate that the average American who carries a balance on their credit cards has a total balance of around $16,000, it’s imperative to stay away from interest payments.
On a $16,000 balance, one month of interest at 16% results in an interest payment of around $210 a month:
- APR: 16.99-23.99%
- Annual fee: $450
- Balance transfer fee: 5%
- Late/returned payment fees: Up to $37
- Foreign transaction fee: None
When compared to other cards in the premium category, the United MileagePlus Club’s APR range is higher than all but one of the cards we examined in our Best Luxury Credit Card of 2017 article.
The annual fee is on par with other cards.
Expert and Consumer Reviews of the United MileagePlus Club Card
We didn’t find many consumer reviews about this card, but the experts were in agreeance that it’s a great card for those who can take advantage of the luxury perks like free lounge club access and World of Hyatt Globalist status.
The Pros of the United MileagePlus Club Card
We’d say this card’s strengths are the 1.5x rewards rate on every-day purchases, which is better than all luxury cards including the Chase Sapphire Reserve and the American Express Platinum.
We also think the complimentary Globalist status with World of Hyatt is huge because no other major premium credit card gives you complimentary membership in a hotel’s highest tier.
The Cons of the United MileagePlus Club Card
In our opinion, this card’s biggest drawbacks are its APR and the lack of a big up-front bonus. Most cards will gift you bonus points if you can spend a certain amount of money in the first three months of owning the card.
For example, the Sapphire Reserve gives 50,000 free Chase Ultimate Rewards Points, the American Express Platinum gives up to 75,000 Membership Rewards Points and the Citi Prestige offers 40,000 points.
The MileagePlus Club does have the $100 bonus after your first purchase. The points equivalent of that cash amount is 10,000, which is still far less than competing cards.
Who the MileagePlus Club Card Is Good For
We believe, based on our research, that this card is best-suited for someone who flies often with United and can take advantage of the free lounge membership, Premier Access, and free baggage perks.

Review: United MileagePlus Club Card (With Big New Sign-Up Bonus)
In the interest of full disclosure, One Mile At A Time earns a referral bonus for anyone that’s approved through some of the below links. These are the best publicly available offers that we have found for each card. Please check out our advertiser policy for further details about the partners we work with. Thanks for your support!
The United MileagePlus® Club Card is United’s premium travel credit card, which comes with access to United Clubs. At the moment it has a very generous increased sign-up bonus, which is worth considering if you’re a United flyer. Here’s what you need to know about this offer:
The United MileagePlus® Club Card is offering a sign-up bonus of 50,000 MileagePlus miles after spending $3,000 within three months, which is a much bigger sign-up bonus than usual — previously the card didn’t offer any sort of mileage bonus when signing up, but rather just a $100 statement credit after the first purchase. I guess they felt they didn’t need to offer much of an incentive to sign-up, given the ongoing perks this card offers.
That bonus isn’t available to those who currently have the card, or who have received a new cardmember bonus on the card in the past 24 months.
Furthermore, it’s worth noting that this card is generally subjected to Chase’s 5/24 rule, meaning you won’t be eligible for the bonus if you’ve opened five or more new card accounts in the past 24 months.
The United MileagePlus® Club Card has a $450 annual fee. That’s definitely on the higher end as far as credit card annual fees go, but the card also comes with lots of perks.
United Club Card return on spend
Most co-branded airline credit cards don’t offer an especially lucrative return on spend, but the United MileagePlus® Club Card does. I’d argue it’s the most compelling return on non-bonused spend offered by any airline credit card. Specifically it offers 2 MileagePlus miles per dollar spent on United purchases, and 1.5 miles per dollar spent on all other purchases, which is an excellent return.
Earning 1.5 United miles per dollar spent is a really solid return on non-bonused spend.
How the United Club membership works
The single biggest perk of the United MileagePlus® Club Card is that it offers a United Club membership for as long as you have the card. Ordinarily if you were to purchase a United Club membership, you’d pay the following amounts:
As you can see, the lowest possible cost for a United Club membership is $450, which is also the annual fee on this card. So almost everyone would come out ahead by having this card rather than buying a membership outright.
The primary cardmember gets a full United Club membership, which works just like any United Club membership. However, authorized users on the card don’t get the same benefit.
While the United Club membership is the most significant perk of the United MileagePlus® Club Card, the card has plenty of other perks as well. Specifically, the primary cardmember:
- Can book award tickets without paying close-in ticketing fees, which can be up to $75 per person per ticket
- Can receive complimentary Premier upgrades on United operated award flights when available, assuming they have status with United
- Receives Premier Access check-in, security, boarding, and baggage handling
- The first and second checked bag free, including for up to one companion, on United operated flights when the cardmember includes their MileagePlus number in the reservation
- Receives Hyatt Discoverist status for as long as they have the card
- Received Hertz President’s Circle status
- Pays no foreign transaction fees
- Receive primary collision damage waiver coverage on rental cars
- Receive a Premier Qualifying Dollar waiver for Premier Silver, Premier Gold, or Premier Platinum, when spending at least $25,000 on the card in a calendar year
Elite members can receive complimentary upgrades on award tickets if they have the United Club Card
How does this compare to other credit cards offering lounge access?
There are a few credit cards out there offering lounge access, and the best one for you is entirely dependent on which airline you fly with most:
- If you’re a United flyer, the United MileagePlus® Club Card is the only one that comes with United Club access
- If you’re an American flyer, the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite™ Mastercard® is the only one that comes with Admirals Club access; this card has the benefit of offering Admirals Club access even for authorized users, which you can add to the card at no extra cost
- If you’re a Delta flyer, I tend to think the The Platinum Card® from American Express or The Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPEN are the best bet for lounge access, as they get you Delta SkyClub access whenever you’re flying Delta, along with access to Centurion Lounges, Priority Pass lounges, and lots more perks
So while the perks by card differ, really your decision should be driven by which lounges you’d use most, rather than anything else.
Historically the United MileagePlus® Club Card hasn’t offered a big sign-up bonus, so the new 50,000 mile bonus is a very nice new perk. However, the real reason to get this card is if you value a United Club membership. This card is also great in terms of the other priority services it offers, including free checked bags, priority check-in, security, boarding, baggage, etc.
If you’ve been considering getting this card, this is as good as it gets, and is definitely better than buying a United Club membership directly.

Do you regularly fly with United Airlines for work? What about their Star Alliance partners? Would you like to hang out in the airline lounge before getting on your flight?

Sign-Up Bonus, Earning Categories, and Points
When you sign up for the United MileagePlus® Club Card, you could have the opportunity to earn a big chunk of United miles thanks to a sign-up bonus. To earn the bonus, you’ll have to meet a minimum spend requirement within a designated time frame.
Check out the summary table above to get the most up to date details on the sign-up bonus.
To continue earnings United miles, you can use this card on your purchases with United Airlines and earn 2X miles per dollar spent. Unlike many other co-branded airline cards, you can actually earn more than 1X mile per dollar spent on all other purchases: the United MileagePlus® Club Card allows you to earn 1.5X miles per dollar spent.
This is a premium credit card, and the annual fee matches what you would expect at $450.
Bottom Line: The United MileagePlus® Club Card from Chase earns 2X miles per dollar with United Airlines and 1.5X miles per dollar on other purchases and comes with a $450 annual fee.
United MileagePlus® Club Card Benefits
If you don’t have elite status with United, just holding the United MileagePlus® Club Card can give you several of the benefits that are often only available to elite status flyers.
As a cardholder, you and a companion are eligible for 2 free checked bags on flights operated by United Airlines. This can save you a ton of money if you fly with United regularly. Your bags will also receive priority handling.
Keep in mind, you must book the flight with your United MileagePlus® Club Card and your companion must be on the same reservation as you.
Priority baggage handling isn’t the only Premier Access perk you will receive though. You will also enjoy priority check-in, which can be vital when you’re running late and need to check a bag. Plus, you’ll get priority boarding privileges to ensure you have overhead compartment space for your carry-on bag.
One final Premier Access perk is priority security screening. This benefit is not available at all airports, but where it is available you can jump the line.
All of these benefits will help you travel as if you had elite status with United.
For those who book economy class award tickets, you’ll love the fact that you will also receive access to extra economy award space. Additionally, the $75 close-in booking fee will be waived regardless of class of service thanks to this card.
Like many Chase cards, you will also receive a number of travel and purchase protection benefits.
The United MileagePlus® Club Card also comes with no foreign transaction fees, so you can use the card while abroad without any worries of extra fees tacked on to charges.
Bottom Line: The United MileagePlus® Club Card gives you the perks of elite status and access to business class lounges around the world.
United, like other major U.S. carriers, awards redeemable miles based on the price of your cash tickets. Without status, you will earn 5X miles per dollar spent on the base fare of your United tickets.
If you hold elite status with United Airlines, you will earn even more miles:
- Premier Silver – 7X miles per dollar
- Premier Gold – 8X miles per dollar
- Premier Platinum – 9X miles per dollar
- Premier 1K – 11X miles per dollar
When paying with the United MileagePlus® Club Card, you will earn an additional 2X miles per dollar spent on top of that.
As long as you keep the card open, the MileagePlus miles you earn won’t expire.
Luxury Travel Benefits of the Card
One amazing perk that even elite status members don’t get is United Club lounge access. Just by being a cardholder, you will receive a full membership to United Clubs. Even top-level elite status members don’t get this perk!
Just think about this: a United Club membership costs $550 unless you maintain Premier 1K elite status ($450 if you do so). This means most people will pay less for the annual fee, but it comes with tons of other benefits.
To take things to the next level, you’ll also receive access to Star Alliance business class lounges whenever you fly with United Airlines or one of their Star Alliance partners. This means you could be flying Turkish Airlines out of Istanbul, Turkey and have access to the famous Turkish business class lounge while waiting for your flight.
As a cardholder, you will also have access to the Luxury Hotel & Resorts Collection. When you book through this program and use your United MileagePlus® Club Card to pay, you’ll receive a number of benefits including:
- Early check-in and late checkout (when available)
- Breakfast for 2 (daily)
- Special property benefit
- Upgrades (when available)
- Complimentary Wi-Fi
So, not only can you have a better flying experience, you can have a better hotel experience too.
You will also receive elite status at World of Hyatt and Hertz. At World of Hyatt, your status level will be bumped up to the Discoverist level, which can provide access to:
- Late checkout (upon request)
- Premium Wi-Fi
- Room Upgrades (when available)
With Hertz, you can enroll as a member of the Hertz President’s Circle, which can get you upgrades and access to increased availability of rental cars.
Comparing the United MileagePlus® Club Card to Other Cards
While the United MileagePlus® Club Card comes packed with perks if you’re flying with United Airlines, the Chase Sapphire Reserve℠ Card and the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card might be better if you’re only looking to earn tons of points.
These cards earn 3X and 2X points per dollar spent, respectively, on travel and dining purchases…which are 2 of the most commonly used categories for those who like to travel. The travel category includes hotels, train tickets, Uber, Lyft, and taxis.
The Chase Sapphire Reserve℠ Card also comes with a Priority Pass Select membership to provide lounge access around the world. However, there are a number of airports in the United States that have United Clubs but not Priority Pass lounges. This can make the United MileagePlus® Club Card quite useful.
If you don’t expect to have more than $300 in checked bag fees, they can be offset by the travel credit provided by the Chase Sapphire Reserve℠ Card. However, regular United flyers might get more use out of the free checked bags from the United MileagePlus® Club Card.
When you consider that both the Chase Sapphire Reserve℠ Card and the United MileagePlus® Club Card each have $450 annual fees, make sure you compare all the details of each card to make the best decision for you.
If you are less concerned about these perks, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card can earn more points on travel and dining purchases and the annual fee is only $95 (waived the first year).
Both the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and the Chase Sapphire Reserve℠ Card earn Ultimate Rewards points, which are transferable to several airline and hotel partners.
The United MileagePlus® Club Card comes with a bunch of perks that make flying United (and even Star Alliance partners) a much better experience.
From access to United Clubs and Star Alliance business class lounges to Premier Access benefits to complimentary checked bags, you can travel like you have elite status.
- You fly with United regularly and want Premier Access benefits as well as free checked bags
- United Clubs and Star Alliance business class lounges would improve your travel experience
- Extra economy award space and no close-in booking fees could make your award bookings easier
- You rarely travel on United or their Star Alliance partners
- Earning points is more of a priority than travel benefits such as Premier Access, free checked bags, and priority boarding
Use the United MileagePlus® Club Card when you shop online through the United MileagePlus shopping portal to earn even more miles. You can also connect the card to your United MileagePlus Dining account to earn more miles when you dine out.
How to Use United MileagePlus® Club Card: The Upgraded Way
To earn the most United miles possible, you’ll want to incorporate earning Chase Ultimate Rewards points into your strategy. This will allow you to earn the maximum number of United miles as possible.
Tip #1: Use a card that earns Chase Ultimate Rewards points when making a purchase in one of the relevant bonus categories.
This could mean using the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or the Chase Sapphire Reserve℠ Card when dining out or on a number of travel purchases, the Chase Freedom® card at the quarterly bonus category that earns 5X points per dollar spent, or the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card to earn 3X points per dollar on a number of categories including travel, advertising, internet, cable, and more.
Tip #2: Use the United MileagePlus® Club Card to earn 1.5X United miles per dollar on purchases that don’t fall under a bonus category of one of the Chase Ultimate Rewards credit cards.
Tip #3: Attach either the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or the Chase Sapphire Reserve℠ Card to the United dining program so you’ll earn 2X or 3X points per dollar spent (respectively) plus United miles from the dining program.
Tip #4: Earn bonus United miles when renting a car through one of United’s partners. Keep an eye out for promotions that will earn you even more United miles through car rentals.
Take advantage of special deals with the United shopping portal to earn more United miles.
Tip #5: Use the United MileagePlus shopping portal whenever possible so you can earn more United miles when shopping online. Keep an eye out for holiday promotions that provide opportunities to earn even more miles.
Tip #6: Take advantage of partners of the MileagePlus X app on your iPhone or Android device.
Tip #7: If you aren’t concerned with hotel status perks or earning hotel points, you can earn United miles through several hotel partners:
You can also book through Rocketmiles to earn United miles.
There are tons of ways to redeem United miles, but whenever you do so, make sure you are getting a great of value out of them.
Here are some tips to help you get the most out of your United miles:
Tip #1: Redeem United miles for international business class or first class flights.
Tip #2: If you don’t have enough miles for that (or you would prefer to take more flights with the miles you have), consider using your United miles on international economy class flights on routes that have expensive cash tickets.
Tip #3: If you have a work trip booked on United or a Star Alliance, depending on the fare class of your cash ticket, it might be worth upgrading to business class or first class with United miles.
Upgrading this way will not require you to use any more cash for the ticket. Keep in mind that upgrades are only available for a select few fare classes
Tip #4: Do not redeem your United miles for car rentals, hotels, or any kind of merchandise. These redemptions provide absolutely terrible values.

The Gritty Details: Everything Else You Need To Know
With the United MileagePlus® Club Card, every purchase becomes a bonus category thanks to its standard 1.5X miles per dollar spent on all purchases that are not with United Airlines. Purchases with United earn 2X miles per dollar spent.
Even with this 1.5X earning, the real selling point with this card is the numerous benefits and perks that include Premier Access, a full United Club membership, access to Star Alliance business class lounges, and elite status with World of Hyatt and Hertz.
Additionally, holding this card provides you with extra economy class award space.
Like other Chase cards, it also comes with trip cancellation insurance, trip interruption insurance, travel accident insurance, auto rental collision damage waiver, trip delay insurance, purchase protection, and more.
The sign-up bonus is only available to new cardholders who haven’t received the same sign-up bonus in the past 24 months. However, if you have other Chase cards, you will still be eligible for the sign-up bonus.

The information related to the United MileagePlus® Club card has been collected by MileCards.com and has not been reviewed or provided by the issuer of this card.
The United MileagePlus® Club card is a premium credit card that earns 1.5 United miles per dollar spent on all purchases (a 50% bonus vs normal United credit cards), and two miles per dollar on tickets purchased from United. The card also offers 50,000 MileagePlus bonus miles after spending $3,000 in the first 90 days. No other credit card earns more United MileagePlus miles from base spending alone.
It comes with a $450 annual fee, which includes full membership to the United Club (a $550 value for non-Premier Platinum and 1K level flyers), and you get the first two checked bags per person for up to two people free. On flights to Asia and Europe that saves $100 each way for the recently increased second checked bag fee, or $400 roundtrip for two – great if you visit family there a couple times a year.
There is sometimes a no fee first year offer for the card – you can check to see if you’re eligible at MPClubCard.com by entering your MileagePlus number and password. However, the fee waiver does not come with the 50,000 mile bonus, meaning you must choose one or the other when you apply.
You earn a 50% mile bonus on all purchases: earn 1.5 MileagePlus miles per dollar spent. There is also a 100% mile bonus on United purchases – earn two miles per dollar spent on tickets purchased from United.
Lounge access: You get full United Club membership (up to a $550 value if purchased separately), which includes access to all United Clubs, Star Alliance business class lounges, and Amtrak Club Acela lounges.
Premium travel privileges: The first two bags are free for you and a companion in your reservation. This includes Asia and Europe flights, where the second bag fee charge is $100 each. You can save $400 roundtrip when two people on a trip check two bags each on flights to Europe and Asia, almost enough to offset the cost of the $450 annual fee. You also get Premier Access airport privileges, which includes priority boarding in Premier Access lane, priority check-in, and use of the priority security lanes.
MileagePlus benefits: You enjoy no “close-in” award booking fees (up to $75 savings per ticket), Premier upgrades on award tickets (if you are a Premier member), and no expiration on miles as long as you hold the card. You also get access to two-for-one business class fares on full fare tickets on flights with international ‘Business First’ service. Click here to learn how it works.
Other travel benefits: No foreign transaction fees, Hertz President’s Circle membership, World of Hyatt Discoverist status (including 2 p.m. checkout, free premium wireless internet, and preferred rooms), Luxury Hotels and Resorts access (featuring amenities including free breakfast, room upgrades, late checkout, and arrival gifts), and primary car rental insurance coverage for accidental collision or theft damages when you use the card to pay for your rental and refuse the collision damage waiver.
If you are already a United Club member, this card is an easy decision: you get the most powerful United mileage earning available for less than the price you’re already paying for membership. No other card earns United miles at a faster rate thanks to the 50% mile bonus on all spending. United will also prorate and refund the United Club membership fee you’ve already paid when you get this credit card.
If you currently hold a Presidential Plus credit card, you have options. While the Presidential Plus credit card is no longer available to new applicants, current cardholders can keep the benefits unchanged. If you do nothing, you’ll continue to earn elite qualifying miles and all the benefits you’re used to. However if you wish, you can switch your account to a United MileagePlus Club card, and instead of earning elite qualifying miles earn 1.5 award miles per dollar spent.
If you are not a United Club member, then there are more things to consider, including the extra mile earning bonus, how much the bag savings are worth (a lot if you check two bags to Europe or Asia at $100 each), how much you think having club membership at hand is worth, and several other travel benefits we talk about below.
See how the 50% mile bonus stacks up
Click to try our calculator to see how many more miles the United Mileage Plus Club Card’s 50% mile bonus can earn you versus the other United credit card options — the United Mileage Plus Explorer (which earns 1 mile per dollar, but a 10,000 mile bonus after $25,000 in spending) and the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card (which offers double points on all dining and travel spend).
Both of those carry a $95 annual fee, versus the $450 on the MileagePlus Club Card. Unless more than half of your spending is on dining and travel, the United MileagePlus Club Card will earn United miles faster than the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card.
However, you miss out on the ability to transfer Ultimate Rewards points earned with the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card into other loyalty programs, including Southwest Airlines, British Airways, Marriott, Hyatt, IHG Rewards Club, and Korean Air, in addition to United. That gives you the most flexibility when you choose to book free travel.
United branded cards like the MileagePlus Club and the MileagePlus Explorer only earn you United miles, which can be used on United and Star Alliance partners, including Air Canada, Eva Air, Lufthansa, and Asiana Airlines.
Full United Club membership – not just United lounge access
If you are approved for the United MileagePlus® Club card, you will be sent a separate United Club membership card. Membership is limited to the primary cardholder only – authorized users will not receive their own membership. Lounge benefits include:
- United Clubs: Entry into all United Clubs around the world for the member and two adult guests, or one adult and one dependent under 21 years old, regardless of what airline you are flying.
- Star Alliance Business Class Lounges: Entry into Star Alliance business class lounges for the member and one guest when flying aboard the Star Alliance carrier. Entry is limited to the departure airport only.
If you haven’t been in a United Club before, you’ll find clubs offer free beverages (including beer, wine and cocktails), dedicated agents to help you with your reservation on the spot, free internet, light snacks including oatmeal in the morning and soup at lunch, and dedicated work stations. While it may be nothing opulent, the United Club can make travel more convenient, especially when things go wrong.
If you don’t feel like carrying your card around, you can also use your boarding pass and United MileagePlus number to get into the United Clubs. However, you will need the separate card for access to Star Alliance partner lounges.
How much does United Club membership cost without the credit card?
If you hold the United MileagePlus® Explorer card, you will receive two complimentary one-time United Club passes every year. Otherwise, United Club day passes cost $59 each, and allow you to enter one United Club per pass. Expired one-time passes, either offered from the MileagePlus Explorer card or from former products, will not be honored for entry.
United Club membership starts at $550 for one person, or $1,100 for a member and their spouse, with a one time $50 initiation fee for new members:
Although an individual membership can be purchased for 70,000 MileagePlus miles, that may be a poor use of miles. Our calculator estimates 70,000 miles equates to just under $700 of travel value – exceeding the $550 membership fee.
Can I also enter United Polaris lounges with my United Club membership?
As the premier flight experience, United Polaris lounge access is strictly limited to United Polaris and international Star Alliance First and Business class passengers. Without a ticket in either class, you will be directed to the nearest United Club – even with United Club membership.
United Airlines flight benefits
If you’re not a Premier level flyer with United (someone who spends $3,000 in qualifying purchases with United and flies 25,000 miles or more with the airline and its partners each year) then the travel benefits also have big value. You’re skipping most bag fees and getting the same priority airport privileges as people who fly between 25,000 and 49,999 miles and spend a significant amount of money on United.
Travel benefits — beyond United
Hertz President’s Circle status: this offers you one car class upgrades when you rent with Hertz at participating locations, when an upgrade is available.
World of Hyatt Discoverist status: — This normally requires 10 stays per year, and gets you 2pm late checkout, free premium wireless internet, and preferred rooms.
Luxury Hotel Collection – You get Breakfast for two daily, a room upgrade, if available at check-in, Early check-in and late check-out, if available, and a very special amenity unique to every property. These aren’t all super expensive hotels either…you can get these benefits at places like the Waldorf Astoria Orlando, the Westin Maui Resort and Spa, and the InterContinental Century City in Los Angeles. You just have to book using the explorelhrcollection.com site.
How is the United Club membership different from other credit cards?
Unlike some premium airline credit cards, the United Club card comes with full membership. This is how the card compares to similar cards:
- Citi / AAdvantage Executive World Elite MasterCard: Full membership in the American Admirals Club, with access to domestic and international lounges, Alaska Airlines Lounges when departing on a Alaska operated or marketed flight, and Qantas Clubs when flying with Qantas or American out of Sydney. Members can bring in their immediate family, including their spouse and children under 18, or up to two guests.
- Chase Sapphire Reserve card: No direct access to United Clubs, but you will have entry privileges to select independent and international airport lounges with Priority Pass.
- Delta Reserve Credit Card from American Express: No membership in the Delta Sky Club, but you will have unlimited entry privileges when space is available. This benefit is only available when flying on Delta.
- The Platinum Card from American Express: Membership into The Centurion Lounge from American Express, allowing you to enter at departure or on arrival when flying any airline. Delta Sky Club entry privileges are also available when flying Delta, along with access to independent Airspace Lounges and select lounges via Priority Pass.
We think the MileagePlus Club Card is the right choice if you fly five or more times per year on United or their Star Alliance partners, and could get some use out of the club benefits. You could also benefit if you have heavy spending on your credit card and can rack up the extra points the 1.5 miles per dollar offers. It’s also helpful if you want your family to enjoy a more comfortable experience on the way to vacations.
